UCLA EM ACROSS SOCAL: The Painted Turtle Bike Challenges and The Southern California Western Regional Emergency Medicine Student's Symposium!

Yesterday was an excellent example of how our UCLA EM Family reaches out beyond our usual universe of world class EM care -- at the Reagan EMC in Westwood, at our Olive View County DEM and at our family sites including Antelope Valley Hospital and Santa Monica UCLA's ED.

Two teams represented us in excellent fashion:

Painted Turtle UCLA Medical Team

Jo Feldman led a team of about twenty volunteers to provide medical support to the Painted Turtle Camp Challenges three bike rides at the camp in Lake Hughes, while our AV family provided the ED backup a few miles away (thankfully not needed) as 150 cyclists rode three circuits, including a metric century.

This is the second year of the 'Camp Challenge' and the UCLA EM family's second year as the medical team, with Janet Rimicci arranging for donation of medical supplies from UCLA's RRUCLA EMC and Pharmacy departments --a big thank you 2 years in a row to Diane Zalba, our RRUCLA Pharmacy Director!

Aside from contributing their time and expertise to protect the riders, spectators and staff, some of our team members also made unsolicited contributions to the Camp -- an above and beyond act of kindness.

Thank you to all for representing us.

Residency Recruitment at the Western Regional EM Student Symposium

Our EM Residency clearly was the best represented 'visiting team' at this EM symposium hosted at USC, by both the UCI and USC EMIG.

A Thorn Among the Roses

Resident Ambassadors  Shawn Kaku, (R4 Chief),  Sophie Terp (R4) and Ashkan Akasheh (R1)  did a spectacular job sharing wisdom and experience (along with Lisa Waltz's homemade cookies and milk!) with students interested in our Residency Program from local schools (UCLA, USC, UCI, Loma Linda, Western and others), as well as visiting students from as far away as Columbia, SUNY Downstate, Tulane and University of Chicago.

Our residency table was also represented by Drs. Votey, Waxman and Morocco -- but no doubt we had the most resident representation, and in my opinion clearly the best (based on student reactions and comments overheard).

Student feedback also indicated that the "Matt and Mark" talk during the lecture series was the day's most dynamic, fun and useful segment, touching on application 'do's and don'ts as well as how to really enjoy and succeed at interview day and beyond.

Thanks again to Shawn, Sophie and Ashkan for coming downtown -- especially after both Shawn and Ash worked the overnight shift!

A great start to the Recruiting Season!

Thank you to all of you who manned the EDs and took care of the patients, the teaching and the mission of all our "UCLA Family" -- allowing us to all volunteer to do these 'extras.'

I'm proud to know you, work with you and look forward to the best year ahead as we move ONWARD AND UPWARD.
